Miya plants blackberries in memory of her grandmother

Nixon, a multi-generational Washingtonian, remembers the blackberry bushes that grew alongside her grandmother’s home in Benning Ridge. When the house was sold, Nixon planted blackberries in her own garden, creating a living archive of her family’s history. In the District, these green spaces allow residents to preserve family traditions and turn cultural memories into new growth.
