Fields of Plenty was the food co-op for the neighborhood. So, we would go there to get our vegetables, fruits and all. You'd also put in time... that's probably where I got most of my food from in the 70's because it was a lot cheaper. Then they also had the farmers market at the corner of 18th and Columbia, where farmers would come in and sell stuff. 18th and Columbia was a vacant lot until construction began on it in 1978 which now we call the Adams Morgan Plaza." Nancy Shia, Interviewed by Claude L. Elliott, 2026. Shia recalls critical neighborhood food sources at the local co-op run by the Adams Morgan Organization (AMO). Communal spaces like co-ops and farmers markets provided residents with access to local and affordable groceries. Portrait Photography by Farrah Skeiky.</image:caption>

The painting is titled Spring Day in Georgetown by Michelle René Cobb, oil on board, 2016, Art Bank Collection, Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The text reads: "I would walk... to work at the Haagen-Dazs... that was kind of my full time job before I left for rock and roll... I used to go from Glover Park down to Georgetown... It was the sidewalks and the streets that I really loved about Washington… And when I'm back there visiting, I just do long walks and I kind of go on my old route... It's like playing an old record…” Henry Rollins, Interviewed by Ray Berker, 2018. In the late 1970's and 1980's, parts of Northwest DC became the heart of a homegrown punk and hardcore scene. This community transformed local businesses and sidewalks into spaces for creative exchange, spreading a "Do-It-Yourself* (DIY) spirit across neighborhoods. Despite decades of neighborhood change, internationally acclaimed punk rocker Rollins recalls a familiarity with these paths.</image:caption>

GREG WRIGHT, Interviewed by Paul Grant, 2026. Wright and his wife, Desiree, are proud lifelong Washingtonians. We lived in the Tiber Island apartment buildings or condos across the street from what is now Arena Stage. And it's the smell that is my first memory rather than a visual. I think smell is like that." ISAAC COSBY HUNT III, Interview by Max Peterson, 2020. Established in 1805, the Maine Avenue Fish Market is the oldest continuously operating open-air seafood market in the United States. Hunt reflects on the strong sensory memories of growing up near the market in the early 1970s.</image:caption>

And even like, up till now in celebrations, my Colombian friend brings a rice. You know, it's sort of everybody bringing a little bit of what makes them feel at home."
